A Judge's Perspective: 2017 AQHA World Junior Working Cow Horse World Champion

Shiney Outlaw and Sarah had just championed the Open Hackamore at the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, in Fort Worth, Texas,  when they entered the arena at the 2017 AQHA World Show. This was Sarah's first showing and their run could not have been any better!

Their phenomenal run shattered the previous AQHA Jr. Working Cow Horse title of 449.5  by an impressive 5.5 points - scoring a new all time high score of 455!

Shiney Outlaw was trained by Zane Davis as a 3 Year Old, they made the 2015 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open finals together but had to scratch due to an injury that was sustained during competition.

CHAMPION OPEN HACKAMORE CLASSIC

Marking huge scores of 222.5 in the reining and 225.5 in the cow work on Shiney Outlaw, Sarah Dawson took home the Open Hackamore title from the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Show and a check worth $8,120.

“He’s a great little horse. He’s easy to show. He’s pretty much always good in the rein work and it’s just drawing a cow that can let him go score big enough because he’s huge down the fence,” Dawson said. “It all fell in to place tonight. He was spot on in the reining and he drew a good cow and it just worked.”

Throughout the reining, Dawson could feel just how good the horse was so her score didn’t surprise her one bit.

“He felt like he was being good and he didn’t miss anything so I knew that they were going to like him,” Dawson said of the stallion. “He’s a huge stopper. You can’t hardly get him to not stop. You say whoa and he slides for miles and he does it every single time-you can’t teach one to do that, they just do it or they don’t.”

During the cow work, Shiney Outlaw (Shiners Nickle x Mereyada), owned by Michelle Cannon, didn’t disappoint and neither did the cow.

“That cow was good all the way through. He didn’t really take a wrong step in the boxing,” Dawson said. “He honored my horse and gave us a good feel when he came out of the gate. Then he ran down the fence nice until he threw us a little dirty in that first turn but Outlaw just gathered himself up and went and got it.”

Sir Long Legs does it again!

Congratulations, The NCHA Southern Futurity Open Derby Champion, shown by Austin Shepard takes home another championship title.

Sir Long Legs, High Brow Cat x Lil Lena Long Legs,  was bred and raised by Michelle Cannon and sold to Lew Hall at the 2015 Western Bloodstock Yearling Sale & Gala .

The duo already have 3 championship titles and over $276,000 in earnings. Watch them in action tithe  2016 NCHA Futurity....

2017 NCHA SUMMER SPECTACULAR CHAMPIONS

Last Night in the NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open Austin Shepard once again came from his favorite spot, the last hole in the finals to claim the win! He and his talented young stallion, Sir Long Legs (High Brow Cat x Lil Lena Long Legs) owned by Lew Hall, marked a huge 229 to take home the Champion’s check amounting to $41,097!

This win allowed him to join Tom Lyons and Matt Gaines in being the only three "Open Riders" to claim all four of the NCHA Major event titles including the Open Futurity, Super Stakes, Summer Spectacular and World Champion Titles! He has come close to this title being Reserve Champion on Widows Intentions in 2004 but this show has been the one to elude him. It was something that he always wanted to accomplish and he did it in a big way.

The excitement was in the air as the pair walked into the pen because everyone knew they could put together a big run. As the run went on and it kept building Austin knew his horse was on he needed to just let it happen and not force anything. He and his help especially Bill Riddle and Brett Davis, who both stayed just to help Austin, had a plan to cut two cows which he started with then the last cow was just one that shaped up the best. Austin went on to say that he could not even tell you the last cow he cut but he knew he did not need to go searching for anything to finish the great run. So many times he has gotten himself in a bind doing that and he just knew that if tonight was his night it would happen, and it certainly did! - CUTTING HORSE CENTRAL

"There were a lot of good horses to choose from, top to bottom." - JIM WARE

The $47,000 highest seller Ware referred to was a 2009 palomino stallion named Von Step At A Time (Wimpys Little Step x Von Freckles x Colonel Freckles). The stallion was consigned by Cannon Quarter Horses, Waxahachie, Texas, and purchased by Gaylon and Paulette Hayes, OK City.

Von Step At A Time earned $44,055 in the reining pen, according to Equi-Stat. With Trey Pool in the saddle, he was the Level 2 Open Reserve Champion at the 2015 NRHA Derby and was the Level 2 Co-Reserve Champion at the 2015 High Roller Reining Classic.

This was the first time in several years that a reining-bred horse has been the highest seller at Triangle. Recent sales have seen this designation consistently go to cutting horses.
